Step into a world of imagination with Fevral - a Folklore at Herbert Art Gallery & Museum

This spring Stewart Easton, a visual storyteller, is bringing his own folkloric tale to the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum in his new exhibition Fevral – A Folklore.

In this magical exhibition Easton explores the development of his very own folk tale. He uses the character of a bear called Fevral to map the journey of a traditional tale from its origin through to the creation of myths and children’s rhymes and also a re-interpretation in contemporary art.

Fevral – a Folklore uses objects and artworks to give a visual presentation to what appears to be an ancient folk tale. Drawing on both historical and ?ctional events, Easton weaves a story which connects the ?ne line between the real and the imagined.

This immersive exhibition is composed of a series of short plot-lines which invite the audience to ?ll in the gaps with their own thoughts, beliefs and in?uences. In the same vein as Der Struwwelpeter by Heinrich Hoffmann and tales told by the Brothers Grimm, Fevral – a Folklore touches on adult themes in both language and imagery.

Stewart Easton is a Coventry-based artist whose illustrations and embroidery have the ability to transport you to a world of witchcraft, log cabins, song birds and fir trees. It is through these works we see Easton’s interest in the folk traditions of pre-war Europe and the Frontier struggles of the first settlers of North America.

It was during Stewart’s MA Illustration and Animation at Coventry University that he began exploring conventional story based forms such as novels and films to produce multiple narratives within a single artwork.

Stewarts work has been displayed at Tate Modern, Ashmolean Museum, V&A, Beers London, 57w57ARTS and Nucleus Portland.

Want more? Why not attend our Herbert Illumination on Tuesday 19 June. During this lunchtime talk, Stewart will give further insight into this magical exhibition.

Fevral – A Folklore is open from 25 May – 2 September.

Admission is free.
