Portrait of a Nation is a photography project that aims to use the medium to bring attention, raise awareness and funds for the U.K growing homeless situation. Through the use of photography Portraits brings the face, the human side of homelessness.
I have been currently traveling the country, visiting major cities, meeting and talking to people who have hit on hard times across the country – the homeless, the people who make their way on the city streets. In the last nine years the U.K has seen an expediential increase in the homeless population and drug abuse. A cut in safeguard & civic innovation, a lack of family, and the introduction of state polices are amongest many variables that have had a massive impact on the vulnerable of society.

The myth of the post-industrial meritocracy is somewhat at odds with the grim reality of reasoning of rough sleeping in bureaucratic plutocracy. The game is rigged, the house is holding the cards and, as for many of us, we are but a pay-cheque away from a life on the streets. Portraits of a Nation offers a qualitative recording of street life and the consequence of current policy. Portraits of a Nation uses a combination of portrait and street photography as well post production techniques using black and whites tones as mode of inquiry so as to bring out character, with an attention to expression - provoking the viewer to action.
