As the old saying goes, ‘great oaks from
little acorns grow’

Ironbridge WWII Weekend has its roots in very humble
beginnings.  Starting as a local pub
event with the aim of raising some money for a veterans’ charity, it has
rapidly grown into one of the country’s most popular 1940s events, now
attracting around 15,000 visitors each year.

The event was voted the best in the country for 2019 by members of a leading
1940s association.

Set in the stunning backdrop of the Ironbridge Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage
Site, the event recreates the experience of life during WWII on both the home
and fighting fronts.  Local shops and
business in the town also take part, making this event a wonderful experience
for the whole family.

Ironbridge WWII Weekend is an event in which all profits made
raise funds for veterans’ charities and has so far raised over £30,000 for
these causes.

Whether you are a seasoned reenactor, have an interest in
WWII or are just looking for a fun family day out, there is something for
everyone at this event.  The large Dale
End Park, on the banks of the River Severn, is packed with military and
civilian living history displays, period stalls selling all things vintage, there
is even a 1940s pub.

During the days, firepower displays, battles, BBMF fly pasts and Remembrance
parades are the order of the day for military enthusiasts.  For those more interested in the Homefront
there is much to see including living history displays about everyday life in
wartime Britain, ration diet cooking demonstrations, dancing, live music, a
vintage pageant and even a children’s sports day.

On Saturday night, a formal dance allows you to don your evening attire or
dress unforms and dance the night away to a live big band.  For those reenactors with period vehicles
there is the opportunity to visit a local WWII airfield and control tower.
