As we begin to emerge from our own pandemic we're excited to present a modern take on Ben Jonson's black comedy set during London's plague lockdown of 400 years ago.
A plague tears through London. The rich and powerful flee for the safety of the countryside. One servant, left in charge of his master’s house, sets up shop there with a phony alchemist and a prostitute.
Forming a villainous ‘venture tripartite’, the three tricksters con the city’s greedy and gullible out of their money - and dignity - one by one in Ben Jonson’s merciless satire of an England ravaged by plague and poverty.
The Alchemist mixes caustic social commentary with broad and bawdy farce to create one of the most enduring comedies in theatrical history.
Directed by Paul Tripp.
