An Immersive Journey

Fifty years ago, the world watched in awe as the first humans landed on the surface of the Moon.

On the eve of our week-long celebration of this stunning achievement, we are creating a truly unique experience, the National Space Centre team are working with Darkside The Pink Floyd Show to host a live performance in the Sir Patrick Moore Planetarium.

Pink Floyd played a major part in the heady days of the 60’s and 70’s, creating thoughtful, melodic and innovative sounds and shows that captured the feelings of optimism and freedom that set out the era as something really very special.

In July 1969, Pink Floyd took part in the live BBC television coverage of the Apollo 11 moon landing, performing an instrumental piece which they called “Moonhead”. The links between the band and the Apollo space programme can be seen in throughout their work.

Darkside The Pink Floyd Show

The band was formed in the summer of 2005 as a result of their desire to not only play but perform the music of Pink Floyd with the same sense of adventure and experimentalism that made the band so unique in the Sixties and Seventies. From the outset their concept has been to capture both the spirit and the tonality of the music without being afraid to add to or adapt the originals to provide that genuine ‘live’ feel.

Darkside utilise a vast array of lighting, laser and pyrotechnic effects that form the basis of their stage show. A performance inspired by the shows that made Pink Floyd famous from their debut in the late 1960s, throughout the Seventies and into the 1980s with the blockbusting tours of ‘The Wall’. Light projections and moving images complement the band’s act and are provided by a dedicated team of sound and lighting engineers that accompany the group, their behind-the-scenes role being an essential part of each gig.
