A film screening of The Breadwinner with guest speaker
The Breadwinner is a 2017 animated drama film by Cartoon Saloon directed by Nora Twomey and executive produced by Mimi Polk Gitlin and Angelina Jolie. It is based on the best-selling novel by Deborah Ellis.
Parvana is an 11-year-old girl who lives under Taliban rule in Afghanistan in 2001. After the wrongful arrest of her father, Parvana cuts off her hair and dresses like a boy to support her family. Working alongside a friend, she soon discovers a new world of freedom and danger. Drawing strength from the fantastical stories she invents, Parvana embarks on an epic quest to find her father and reunite her family. See more at www.thebreadwinner.com
Guest Speaker: Shukria Rezaei
We are absolutely privileged to have Shukria speak at our event, sponsored by The Like-Minded. Seven years ago, when Shukria Rezaei was 14, she left Afghanistan with her mother and arrived in Oxford speaking very little English. Now she’s an award-winning and published poet, has won an apprenticeship with the Forward Arts Foundation and now, at 20, is a scholarship-student at the University of London.
