The majestic birch, an important pioneer tree and common in areas of our beautiful ancient woodland site, has so much to offer those practising bushcraft; on this day course you will learn about the many uses of the birch tree and taste the delights it has to offer. This multi-skill course has something to offer everyone who enjoys spending time outdoors in nature.
The day will include:
Choosing a suitable tree
Tapping
Make a spile
Tree care – preventing damage & infection
Collecting sap
Birch sap as drinking water
Making birch syrup
Beyond sap – other uses of birch
basic fire lighting
useful fungi from birch
Take home a small bottle of birch syrup and birch water. (bring your own sterile bottles) Light refreshments will be provided; please bring a pack lunch and adequate drinking water for the day. The site has compost toilets and hand washing facilities for your use. Suitable footwear and outdoor clothing is required.
