Clive Holland presents - Preview: The Man In The Cellar at Proteus Creation Space

Join us for preview performances of The Man in the Cellar – a solo production by Clive Holland, a humorous and disturbing tale of despair, shame, madness and circus clowns!

A man hides in the darkness of a cellar, with only a corpse and his past for company. The world outside is filled with monsters. Inside the cellar, the monsters are in his head. They say that the split second before death your life flashes by in front of you … his worry, is that he isn’t in it … just an innocent bystander to his own existence! “I was born … so there is that!”

But did he live?

This solo production, written and performed by Clive Holland, has a caricatured biographical element to it, that plays like a graphic novel … without the graphics! You have to make your own pictures up. It is a disturbing and humorous tale of despair, shame, madness and circus clowns!

As it slithers and slides to a quiet conclusion through the mire of surviving a world that no-one understands, it will entertain, enlighten and probably bewilder.

These pieces of brand new contemporary theatre have been developed art part of our Performance Lab artist development programme and are now at the ‘audience testing’ stage before they head out on tour. For some of the artists, this may be the first time this version of the show has been performed to a live audience. Please be aware this may mean that the show will be performed without the full lighting and set that will be part of the tour.

This is an exciting opportunity for local audiences to see high-quality theatre and critically engage with the artist’s creative process before the rest of the world!
